chungkin’s seconds of fame

In the past 3 days, baby chungkin & I shot our first ever tvc & print commercial. And boy was it an eye-opening & interesting experience.

[background: advertiser needed a preggy lady as one of the main talents and somehow production felt the real deal was still better than having an actress pretend to be like one; so one call led to another, my post-natal massage lady (a friend of one of the production crew) asked if I was free & interested to try out. And since I didn't have a job nor commitments to attend to - I agreed to it, plus I was also curious to find out what it was about and would be like.]

The main gist of the ad was to promote fairness in the workplace and to give everyone a chance (i.e.: not discriminate the pregnant, elderly, handicapped etc.) and I thought it was a pretty good message to be part of.

I had dearest mommy who volunteered to chaperone me on all 3 days (thank you mom!) while the very grateful husband was busy mugging for his upcoming exam. And turns out, she had a blast getting to know the various production people/crew on set as well!

It was also amusing when some of the talents asked if my belly was a ‘prop’ (a fake tummy) / and if I was donning it on throughout to really get into my role on separate occasions! While others would asked which agency I was from. Turns out that most of them were either freelance talents or managed by an agency and had some form of acting experience vs. clueless mama here.

I had a fantastic time, albeit feeling a little worn-out from the 2 days of filming especially on the first day when I didn’t quite know what to expect. I did manage to start getting the hang of it (and basically ensuring that I had ample rest on the night before) by the 2nd day, and was very well taken care of throughout – lots of sitting (they would even have someone bring in a chair for me to sit between takes), rest breaks in between and very well-fed…there was almost always food & drinks available. And getting first hand scoops/stories/experiences/accounts from the people I worked & chatted with was of great hilarity !!!

Never again will I look at tv shows & commercials in the same light. Filming/ shooting is definitely hard work and there’s just so much that goes into producing that mere 30 sec or 1 min commercial, let alone a tv series or a movie.

Kudos to the great production team I worked with and I can’t believe that chungkin’s already famous in-utero! HAH!

Here’s some pix taken between the 3 days, with none on set  because we weren’t allowed any photos by venue’s gate-keepers. :x

Met my lovely fellow mommies for a catch-up valentine’s meal today followed by some baby shopping at KP before ending it off with a cup of KOI.

Spending time laughing & chatting with them was a blast – time just flew by so quickly.

Here we are, all in our 3rd tri…enjoying the last leg of our personal ‘freedom’ before the little ones start popping out of their ovens.

An unexpected start to the ‘year of the dragon’

For days leading up to this Lunar New Year, I was quite the eager beaver; looking forward to the celebrations.

Things didn’t turned out quite as planned though.

Ironically being pregnant, I had more new clothes (a Chinese tradition) than previous years (pre-pregnancy) all ready to be worn for at least 10 out of the 15 days of celebration. I had more enthusiasm to spring clean the home than before. And I definitely had more energy to go and bask in the festive atmosphere by hanging out at various Chinese New Year (CNY) fairs with the husband over the weekends. I also had more of a better appetite as I savored pineapple tarts, bak kwa, kueh lapis, deep fried prawn rolls & love letters with the little one returning a powerful kick each time.

And I think I was really embracing this CNY so openly & acceptingly after 2 years of dreading it because baby chungkin was finally with us. I no longer had to answer to anyone; even if I only saw them once a year, why our family planning was not as immediate after the wedding. [p/s: to international readers, CNY is also the time when older relatives think they have a right to grill you about your personal matters/life out of concern although one might think it's to fill their gossip quota for the rest of the year :p] I no longer had to worry about looking the least pregnant or be asked strangely if that extra weight gain was due to a baby being on the way  - which was the case for me last CNY. I no longer had to be nagged about which zodiac aka. animal we should consider to have our baby born by – now we know baby chungkin going to be a ‘dragon baby‘, which is also deemed as the most powerful animal of the 12 in the Chinese zodiac. Not that it matters to the Bo & me because all we want is just a healthy, happy baby regardless of zodiacs.

Doing house visits this CNY posed a different sort of challenge though. We had 5 places (aka. older relatives to visit) to visit on the 1st day, and by the 2nd home, my feet was swelling so bad I could hardly fit into my shoes any more without hurting. We also didn’t get any proper food to eat, mainly just pastries and Chinese goodies that was served till the 5th visit which was at my mom’s place. And being pregnant, that was quite a torture because at one point I really just wanted some real food aka. rice.

Visits was very enjoyable though, answering to how far along we were in the pregnancy and how I was feeling. :p

But it wasn’t till the 2nd day of CNY when my festive cheer and mood was dampened. I had barely kick-started my string of celebrations and there I was in the morning, waking up to a very bad throat & headache. I thought it was probably due to insufficient sleep and that it will go away but came yesterday afternoon at the 2nd house visit of the day at my godparents’, my reflux got so bad that entire lunch just came out. I was also starting to run a temperature, was shivering and a bad headache that we had to cut short our visit (thanks to understanding godparents). The Bo also had to cancel a visit to the boss’s place by just hopping over (boss place was just 3 min drive from my godparents’) to explain that I wasn’t feeling well and we were headed for home right after that.

Popped in a panadol, took a nap hoping that the slight migraine & fever would subside by evening time so that I could go to my aunt’s place for our supposedly 4th house visit (plus I was really looking forward to her signature curry & lemak dishes for dinner) and although temperature went away for about an hour, it came back with a vengeance soon enough. Didn’t help that the Bo went out to a nearby coffeeshop with his bestie for a while during the time when my first fever had subsided and by evening time, I started to burn so badly that my eyes were both watery & stingy, and my belly was terribly hot. I quickly placed a cold compress on the belly to bring down the temperature for baby chungkin but the towels would warm up within a minute or so. I was worried sick, more for baby’s health. It must have felt like an oven in there and while I’ve read about fever potentially causing miscarriages mainly in the 1st tri, I didn’t want to take a chance.

I called for the Bo to be back immediately. Said I was burning (he did chide me for not calling earlier), and we headed to KKH 24-hr O&G for some medical attention. I was in tears, in between shivers and burning temperatures, praying that all will be okay. We got to the hospital in good time, and I was quickly sent to the delivery suite because I was over 6 months pregnant. They registered me quickly enough (didn’t go to TMC because I heard that my gynae was away for the holidays and I needed immediate attention), sent me & husband to the delivery suite where I was strapped to the CTG machine to monitor potential contractions and baby’s heartbeat. Apparently any increase in temperature or fever does impact baby’s heartbeat and baby chungkin’s was beating way faster than the usual. I was given more cold compress to bring my temperature down as we waited for the gynae on duty to attend to us. There had been recent cases of H1N1 virus aka tamiflu making its rounds so the staff wanted to make sure that I was clear of it.

We waited for about 15 minutes for the gynae to arrive while I was being monitored and I was praying my heart & tears out that all will be okay. Here we were, with only about 8 weeks to go and I really didn’t want anything to go absurdly wrong – I was asked a few times to confirm that we were about 29 hitting 30 weeks and I kept thinking connecting with the little one to ask if he could bake in there for a while longer as I saw the incubator in the delivery room.

The gynae gave me a body check, tapped the tummy to incite movements from baby, checked my throat (good thing my tonsils weren’t inflamed badly yet) before discharging me. She prescribed some drowsy medication to address every symptom I had and I was told to monitor my temperature over the next 2 days to ensure it goes away or I’d have to come in again for another round of checks.

I was thankful that we had got ourselves checked out early and nothing serious happened to baby. Thankful for the prayers that came streaming in via SMS and whatsapp by concerned family & friends. And happy to received 2 prompt email response from my gyane that he was back in town, asked what happened and  that everything sounded okay after I updated him on heart rate and what the KKH gynae told me. I left KKH still with a relatively high fever, shivering, hungry with no appetite to absorb anything but it was all okay knowing that the chungkin was doing just fine.

The Bo sponged the tummy the whole night and when my belly finally cooled down, we saw a series of movements from the chungkin that absolutely made our night! And as of this morning, the high fever has subsided leaving me slightly feverish and I am just going to make sure I rest up and recover from this one properly. I can’t imagine having to deal with another similar incident apart from labour in the next few weeks.

Not quite the start I was expecting for this Lunar New Year (missing out from all the visiting and feasting) but as long as baby chungkin is going on strong and well in there, that’s all that matters.

And that leaves me with only photos from the celebrations prior to the heart-stopping incident:

The tea-time lady and entering the 3rd tri…

I’ve always wondered the fascination with TWG (after all they just sell tea, right?) since spotting their tea boutiques; and it wasn’t till I had my first session there last Dec (initiated by request from a friend who wanted to have tea there) that I may have concluded the hype about it.

For the friend (an Australian chick who loves visiting Singapore and always wanted to have tea there), it was about the macaroons, ambience and cute staff.

For me, there was just something very English about the entire affair (and I’m quite the sucker for all things English). The nostalgic furnishing perhaps, or fine bone china being used, friendly staff dressed primp & properly, to even the lovely choice of ‘Disney music’ (as I term it) being played in the background – it felt like I was transported into a magical place oozing of old-world charm. Sitting & watching the world go by within the tea boutique and outside (credit goes to excellent choice of venues & location within the malls) and feeling like a lady of leisure, if even only for a few hours. And needless to say, the various aromas fused from the different teas and those scones served with tea jelly – icing on the cake.

Today was the 3rd visit for me in 2 weeks – with a different bunch of ladies each time of course, and I had lunch there for the 1st time, which is not too bad! I know it sounds pretty extravagant, but it was definitely one of the better places where we could really get a decent conversation going on without having to repeat.

Plus with b.chungkin making his appearance in a matter of 10-12 weeks, …here’s to tea, scones, awesome catching up with great company for at least 1 more time before D(elivery) day and motherhood begins! Don’t think the little one’s company will be appreciated by other patrons by then :p

And on an even happier note, here’s me at almost-28 weeks:

A cozy goodbye to ’11 and first few moments of 2012

Obviously the plan (from NYE 2010) to celebrate NYE 2011 in NYC didn’t work out since baby chungkin came into the picture this year (no flight mandate, remember?). Not that we would trade it for anything else.

Hence this new year’s eve was celebrated with mom and bo over a hearty dinner (thank u mom!) & desserts before we welcomed 2012 under a spectacular display of fireworks amongst thousands at Marina Bay Sands! I loved how ‘em 2 angels were also busy protecting b.chungkin from getting squashed/squeezed/hit in the belly from the crowds. :)

Had a wonderful time bonding with them, albeit pockets of exhaustion hitting me in between dinner & fireworks despite an arvo snooze earlier. B.chungkin was a good boy, or so I thought, responding mostly when we ‘communicated’ with him via talking or light pats on the belly. Just wanted to check in to see if he was enjoying himself too, and I could only assume he was, since his mama was having such a ball of a time.

Christmas 2011 round-up

I had the longest nights in the past 3 days – turning in only at near to 3am due to festive celebrations (and sadly still waking up at 9am due to habit) but boy was it worth every moment of yawn & exhaustion; knowing that I had a little party-mate who was enjoying himself in the belly – bobbing and dancing to music played loudly & giving a little punch of acknowledgement each time I gobbled down some lovely cakes and ice-cream.

This Christmas, spending our last as a couple was also made extra special as the Bo took us on little dates & strolls in between; enjoying the last bits of us-time as we reflected how much has happened (for the better) since 12 months ago – when we were still deeply desiring to be parents then and how difficult it was for me to enjoy the festivities because everyone was practically asking when we were going to be parents (which really sucked because I wished they would just say ‘Merry Christmas’ back in response and let me enjoy those few hours instead). And thanks to a very supportive husband who would constantly whisper to me that our time will eventually come and that it would be magical, I managed to survive through christmas 2010.

So back to this year’s roundup, I totally enjoyed feasting on the spread (as always) being prepared although I was reminded to limit my quantity on prime ribs, beef & lamb (but they were just soooo good) and desserts (instructions from the gynae). The Bo also allowed me a sip of his cloudy bay – which was all I wanted anyway. It was extremely heartwarming receiving gifts mostly for b.chungkin from the usual suspects (I did receive a very beautiful box of baby shower bingo and maternity-styled dress from the cousin for myself though :p) too. And too hilarious when some started asking the Bo if we had really decided on baby’s name to be ‘chungkin’ (along with a puzzled look) – due to my sign off in the card. (p/s: chungkin is really more of a term of endearment for us and yes, he will have a proper name).

6 months / baby chungkin becomes my +1…

So here I am, finally 6 months along in this pregnancy…hooray!

{6 months along, wearing a very comfy Isabella Oliver maternity dress, carrying my fave ysl clutch and in ribbon low pumps from pazzion}

And for the first time, though the husband was away for work; I had b.chungkin as my +1! It was also hilarious being told (by guests) to take good care of myself & the little bub (upon being greeted by my jelly belly) as I helped handled reception duties for Dre’s wedding this evening.

It was such a beautiful evening. Dre was radiant & gorgeous as always, finally met her husband for the first time (I used to only know him through photos in Facebook), got reconnected to ex-secondary school mates (oh those lovely times!), caught up more with my IJ girlies (Fi’s getting ROMed in 2 months’ time!), managed to take some lovely shots with my good friends etc – it was absolutely amazing to be in the presence of such a joyous occasion & spirit in the air. Helps that the festivities are just a week away.

The very beautiful bride

My highlight of the evening has definitely got to be when the families of the bride & groom chose to replace the traditional ‘yum seng’ (Chinese way of toasting) with a tribute song toasted to God instead. A very simple gesture yet extremely underrated by many Christians today. Again, I felt immensely emotional as they sung the chorus (to God be the glory, to God be the glory) . I reckon this baby sure knows how to tug at mommy’s heartstrings along with dancing to the beat of every marching in music that was played. Musician in the making, aye?

More beautiful moments captured:

& one last narcissistic shot because I’m absolutely loving curls on my hair.

Days shy of 6 months now

I have to admit, I haven’t been willing to be in any photos recently because me thinks me body is starting to develop a weird, odd shape (instead of beautiful round ones like those ladies in my yoga class) due to a calorie growth contributed by milkshakes & famous amos cookies.

Hence the lack of any narcissistic portraits / posts.

Growing a pretty pregnancy belly is not going as per plan for now…. :( But what I can attest is that I feel a lot more active & healthy, even more so than I was pre-pregnancy. I walk a lot more & do yoga twice a week – I can do 5 sets of improvised sun salutations (with plank & downward dog poses) without panting as crazily as I did when I first started. A huge improvement, considering my lifestyle was filled with car/taxi rides & zero exercises in the past 2 years… Having a baby does make you want to do stuff out of your comfort zone aye! That, along with drinking milk (the last I did so was when I was 12 years old).

Anyhoos, enough of the me-talk and here’s a shot of the jelly belly at 23 weeks – for posterity’s sake.

{wearing H&M tunic layered over Cotton On tunic, Promod belt and Naturalizer sandals}

It’s starting to feel a lot more real now with responses & ‘scheduled movements’ (apparently baby chungkin seems to have a schedule of his own). Yay-ness!

While most need their bubble tea fix, I just need…

my milkshakes. thank you very much.

It was also through sipping this cup of goodness that I experienced at least 5-7 minutes of continuous movements and kicking from the bubba as though he was enjoying it along with me. Pampered, much?

Meanwhile, here’s me counting to being almost 21-weeks shortly after a stretch & tone session at Mother & Child earlier today:

{Wearing Uniqlo tunic, H&M leggings & Naturalizer Sandals}

Almost 21-weeks!

The session was quite different from the other pre-natal yoga classes I’ve been attending but enjoyable nonetheless with lots of breathing, stretching of thigh & pelvic muscles – all to aid us in our natural delivery. Let’s just hope when push comes to shove, I’ll remember all these exercises and deliver[pun intended].

Halfway there

I finally managed to capture belly shots of my halfway triumph!

the 20-weeks jelly belly

In other news, this week was made an extra special one with:

- a good catch-up session with Mel (my once pen-pal from aussieland since 8 years ago), Nate (her hubs) and their latest addition to the family: baby Lucille. The last I met with Mel was 3 years back in London when she had just settled in there for work and it was so good seeing her again, and especially her gorgeous bub.

- My dearest BR & bestie cum future godma Jas taking time off (although it was about 2.5 hours vs. an entire day, hee hee) to help me de-clutter some shelves, loads of things to make space for baby chungkin’s cot. It was annoying initially, her just tossing out things I haven’t used yet or didn’t like, but indeed effective. I realized how much of a hoarder I was too, which is bad since I’m always saying that mil is a huge one, especially when it comes to old kitchen pots & pans :(

The Bo & I have really been enjoying our ‘reclaimed’ space & the new neatness thanks for Jas. He’s also requested & commissioned her to come help with creating some wardrobe space for baby soon. Looks like I will have to say bye to some clothes really soon – but all for a good cause nonetheless and I can’t express enough how much I really appreciate what you, BR, has done for us.

The temporary holding storage area for when baby cot arrives and new storage cabinets are built elsewhere in the room…

- An awesome night out, catch up session with the Queenies over a round of steamboat/bbq dinner followed by drinks & desserts at Hotel Intercontinental’s lobby. *burp* It was fantastic seeing Kris again, since he’s been based in Hong Kong for most of this year; and also laughing over the silliest of jokes, conversations and youtube videos with all of them. I really missed hanging out with them so much. Really appreciated that they bothered to dedicate almost 50% of the night brainstorming of potential baby names or nicknames too!

It was indeed a heartwarming moment to see how much the first baby in the group mattered to them and how much they fussed and took such good care of me. I love them!

P/s: Pardon the heavily pixelated photos via the iPhone, which is making me very very tempted to get a nifty compact camera for when baby boy makes his appearance …

It’s almost end of the week, already?

Thank you everyone (post Elphie’s virtual baby shower) for stopping by and sending your love & wonderful wishes this way too. It’s been so amazing – to ‘meet’ & connect with a like-minded community from around the globe. And also to Elphie for that beautiful gesture of a shout-out. Another reason why you rock!

My first week back at doing pretty much nothing (aka. not working) has been flying by quickly & eventful – thanks to a Diwali public holiday which happened mid this week, lots of appointments/catching up in between and the husband taking tomorrow (Friday) off to spend some quality couple time before we meet some friends for pre-dinner drinks to welcome the weekend (can’t believe this will also be the last weekend of Oct’11! – where has the year gone to already?).

We also met up with our designer few days ago to explore 1st cut proposals of project make-room-for-baby-chungkin and realized how practical we’ve become when we rejected the idea of having a low lying bed on a low lying platform section without any hesitation. Any big, delicate showpieces also went out of the window regardless how pretty the sketches looked.

On Saturday, we have the possibility of finding out if baby chungkin is growing a penis or not (fingers crossed that baby chungkin doesn’t get all cheeky and starts bending knees again) and that news alone has been exciting for quite a few people with most placing their bets on camp blue. Mm…hopefully we’ll have some updates then!

Ending it off with some snaps over the week and a 17 weeks+ belly. x
