Nearly there, less than 40 days to go!

{with Ashley & Annie – loving their combination of colors too! }

Met my lovely fellow mommies for a catch-up valentine’s meal today followed by some baby shopping at KP before ending it off with a cup of KOI.

Spending time laughing & chatting with them was a blast – time just flew by so quickly.

Here we are, all in our 3rd tri…enjoying the last leg of our personal ‘freedom’ before the little ones start popping out of their ovens.

my band heroes

I finally got to meet up with the Queenies for our annual “loh hey” gathering over CNY, with some band hero/rock band activities thrown in.

It was lovely just being able to see, hug & catch-up with all of them again despite feeling very under the weather but I had oodles of fun.

And the highlight has got to be when they surprised me with a birthday cheesecake topped with hagen daaz strawberry ice-cream!

recovery

Thank you everyone for your concerned sms/whatsapp/messages/comments/emails.

The cough has subsided from a chesty one to a dry one. no more gross looking greens coming out though the urinary continence still persists along with each cough. I had an embarrassing moment this morning while sleeping. I was too lazy to get out of bed to visit the loo so I held it in and some 4 coughs later, even my trusted poised pads for urinary leaks couldn’t hold it all in. :(

Glad I recovered about 90% too, because I was really looking forward for some crab feasting and catching-up with some friends tonight. And boy did we enjoy our crabs so much (there was pepper, butter, cream, chilli) that the moment we started getting our hands dirty on crabs, all conversations came to a halt till after we were done!

That’s full crab concentration for you. :p

{deep fried buns vs. healthy steamed ones. guess which ones ran out first!}

And in case you’re wondering, yes we’re all pregnant!!!  :) …which did invite some questions & attention from other residents who saw us in the lift together.

On my way up to friend’s place, I even took a chance & asked a pregnant lady if she was here for the crab party as well (since I was aware that our guest lists were all preggies). And indeed she was! Phew.

It’s amazing how we got to know each other through 6 degrees of separation, and even more amazing was how there’s just an instant spark & connection when one preggers meets another regardless of familiarity. LOL.There’s just SO much to talk about.

Food was really good and was ordered from:

I had a fabulous night, with enough crap crabs to last me for a few months.

An unexpected start to the ‘year of the dragon’

For days leading up to this Lunar New Year, I was quite the eager beaver; looking forward to the celebrations.

Things didn’t turned out quite as planned though.

Ironically being pregnant, I had more new clothes (a Chinese tradition) than previous years (pre-pregnancy) all ready to be worn for at least 10 out of the 15 days of celebration. I had more enthusiasm to spring clean the home than before. And I definitely had more energy to go and bask in the festive atmosphere by hanging out at various Chinese New Year (CNY) fairs with the husband over the weekends. I also had more of a better appetite as I savored pineapple tarts, bak kwa, kueh lapis, deep fried prawn rolls & love letters with the little one returning a powerful kick each time.

And I think I was really embracing this CNY so openly & acceptingly after 2 years of dreading it because baby chungkin was finally with us. I no longer had to answer to anyone; even if I only saw them once a year, why our family planning was not as immediate after the wedding. [p/s: to international readers, CNY is also the time when older relatives think they have a right to grill you about your personal matters/life out of concern although one might think it's to fill their gossip quota for the rest of the year :p] I no longer had to worry about looking the least pregnant or be asked strangely if that extra weight gain was due to a baby being on the way  - which was the case for me last CNY. I no longer had to be nagged about which zodiac aka. animal we should consider to have our baby born by – now we know baby chungkin going to be a ‘dragon baby‘, which is also deemed as the most powerful animal of the 12 in the Chinese zodiac. Not that it matters to the Bo & me because all we want is just a healthy, happy baby regardless of zodiacs.

Doing house visits this CNY posed a different sort of challenge though. We had 5 places (aka. older relatives to visit) to visit on the 1st day, and by the 2nd home, my feet was swelling so bad I could hardly fit into my shoes any more without hurting. We also didn’t get any proper food to eat, mainly just pastries and Chinese goodies that was served till the 5th visit which was at my mom’s place. And being pregnant, that was quite a torture because at one point I really just wanted some real food aka. rice.

Visits was very enjoyable though, answering to how far along we were in the pregnancy and how I was feeling. :p

But it wasn’t till the 2nd day of CNY when my festive cheer and mood was dampened. I had barely kick-started my string of celebrations and there I was in the morning, waking up to a very bad throat & headache. I thought it was probably due to insufficient sleep and that it will go away but came yesterday afternoon at the 2nd house visit of the day at my godparents’, my reflux got so bad that entire lunch just came out. I was also starting to run a temperature, was shivering and a bad headache that we had to cut short our visit (thanks to understanding godparents). The Bo also had to cancel a visit to the boss’s place by just hopping over (boss place was just 3 min drive from my godparents’) to explain that I wasn’t feeling well and we were headed for home right after that.

Popped in a panadol, took a nap hoping that the slight migraine & fever would subside by evening time so that I could go to my aunt’s place for our supposedly 4th house visit (plus I was really looking forward to her signature curry & lemak dishes for dinner) and although temperature went away for about an hour, it came back with a vengeance soon enough. Didn’t help that the Bo went out to a nearby coffeeshop with his bestie for a while during the time when my first fever had subsided and by evening time, I started to burn so badly that my eyes were both watery & stingy, and my belly was terribly hot. I quickly placed a cold compress on the belly to bring down the temperature for baby chungkin but the towels would warm up within a minute or so. I was worried sick, more for baby’s health. It must have felt like an oven in there and while I’ve read about fever potentially causing miscarriages mainly in the 1st tri, I didn’t want to take a chance.

I called for the Bo to be back immediately. Said I was burning (he did chide me for not calling earlier), and we headed to KKH 24-hr O&G for some medical attention. I was in tears, in between shivers and burning temperatures, praying that all will be okay. We got to the hospital in good time, and I was quickly sent to the delivery suite because I was over 6 months pregnant. They registered me quickly enough (didn’t go to TMC because I heard that my gynae was away for the holidays and I needed immediate attention), sent me & husband to the delivery suite where I was strapped to the CTG machine to monitor potential contractions and baby’s heartbeat. Apparently any increase in temperature or fever does impact baby’s heartbeat and baby chungkin’s was beating way faster than the usual. I was given more cold compress to bring my temperature down as we waited for the gynae on duty to attend to us. There had been recent cases of H1N1 virus aka tamiflu making its rounds so the staff wanted to make sure that I was clear of it.

We waited for about 15 minutes for the gynae to arrive while I was being monitored and I was praying my heart & tears out that all will be okay. Here we were, with only about 8 weeks to go and I really didn’t want anything to go absurdly wrong – I was asked a few times to confirm that we were about 29 hitting 30 weeks and I kept thinking connecting with the little one to ask if he could bake in there for a while longer as I saw the incubator in the delivery room.

The gynae gave me a body check, tapped the tummy to incite movements from baby, checked my throat (good thing my tonsils weren’t inflamed badly yet) before discharging me. She prescribed some drowsy medication to address every symptom I had and I was told to monitor my temperature over the next 2 days to ensure it goes away or I’d have to come in again for another round of checks.

I was thankful that we had got ourselves checked out early and nothing serious happened to baby. Thankful for the prayers that came streaming in via SMS and whatsapp by concerned family & friends. And happy to received 2 prompt email response from my gyane that he was back in town, asked what happened and  that everything sounded okay after I updated him on heart rate and what the KKH gynae told me. I left KKH still with a relatively high fever, shivering, hungry with no appetite to absorb anything but it was all okay knowing that the chungkin was doing just fine.

The Bo sponged the tummy the whole night and when my belly finally cooled down, we saw a series of movements from the chungkin that absolutely made our night! And as of this morning, the high fever has subsided leaving me slightly feverish and I am just going to make sure I rest up and recover from this one properly. I can’t imagine having to deal with another similar incident apart from labour in the next few weeks.

Not quite the start I was expecting for this Lunar New Year (missing out from all the visiting and feasting) but as long as baby chungkin is going on strong and well in there, that’s all that matters.

And that leaves me with only photos from the celebrations prior to the heart-stopping incident:

the more we get together

Spent yesterday morning catching up a little with the BR and then with the rest of Queenies over at Sinema @ Old School, while lending our support for Ning’s mega magic gig (pity Jas & I had to leave first and didn’t get to witness her act though).

Did some walking about the ex-MGS school compound with the Bo & girls, taking silly photos here and there.

I love hanging out with me girlfriends so much :p

And here’s me just about a week away to entering 3rd trimester (27 weeks ++). Yay!

{wearing one of my favorite cobalt blue frocks from maternity exchange, which I got at a steal!}

And the feasting continues…

Happy Boxing Day! :)

The start of merry-making

My legs nearly gave way after 7 hours of Christmas shopping today as I took on the last leg of the race. Happy to report that I’ve settled almost all presents for the family and friends except for a final 1 or 2 which will have to wait till Thursday because I really need to recuperate before hitting the shops again unless of course I have my husband / mom next to me to ‘fend off’ pushy, inconsiderate people whose eyes just seem glued to everywhere else except to the direction they are walking in.

Meanwhile, Christmas merry-marking parties kicked-off last Friday with an all-preggers gathering-cum-celebration. And in midst of all those feasting, drinking (mocktails, of course), laughing, chatter; it felt really good to have b.chungkin participating with all his wonderful kicks, rolls, punches and even the occasional annoying pelvic pain at the most inappropriate times.

I can only imagine next year’s Christmas celebrations – when we all become mommies with our little bubs – might have to be confined to home-based venues instead….we’ll see!

{A very happy mommy}

{I’m a card-person, so giving one to the Bo was a definite must}

{Christmas/Birthday present for the Bo – who needed a new pair of shoes.He was so happy with these paid :p}

And now…back to last bit of spring cleaning, wrapping of gifts and resting before the Bo takes the rest of the week off tomorrow for some quality couplehood time before +1 comes along really soon.

xo.

Halfway there

I finally managed to capture belly shots of my halfway triumph!

 In other news, this week was made an extra special one with:

- a good catch-up session with Mel (my once pen-pal from aussieland since 8 years ago), Nate (her hubs) and their latest addition to the family: baby Lucille. The last I met with Mel was 3 years back in London when she had just settled in there for work and it was so good seeing her again, and especially her gorgeous bub.

- My dearest BR & bestie cum future godma Jas taking time off (although it was about 2.5 hours vs. an entire day, hee hee) to help me de-clutter some shelves, loads of things to make space for baby chungkin’s cot. It was annoying initially, her just tossing out things I haven’t used yet or didn’t like, but indeed effective. I realized how much of a hoarder I was too, which is bad since I’m always saying that mil is a huge one, especially when it comes to old kitchen pots & pans :(

The Bo & I have really been enjoying our ‘reclaimed’ space & the new neatness thanks for Jas. He’s also requested & commissioned her to come help with creating some wardrobe space for baby soon. Looks like I will have to say bye to some clothes really soon – but all for a good cause nonetheless and I can’t express enough how much I really appreciate what you, BR, has done for us.

The temporary holding storage area for when baby cot arrives and new storage cabinets are built elsewhere in the room…

- An awesome night out, catch up session with the Queenies over a round of steamboat/bbq dinner followed by drinks & desserts at Hotel Intercontinental’s lobby. *burp* It was fantastic seeing Kris again, since he’s been based in Hong Kong for most of this year; and also laughing over the silliest of jokes, conversations and youtube videos with all of them. I really missed hanging out with them so much. Really appreciated that they bothered to dedicate almost 50% of the night brainstorming of potential baby names or nicknames too!

It was indeed a heartwarming moment to see how much the first baby in the group mattered to them and how much they fussed and took such good care of me. I love them!

P/s: Pardon the heavily pixelated photos via the iPhone, which is making me very very tempted to get a nifty compact camera for when baby boy makes his appearance …

One of the better…

I had quite the weekend.

FRIDAY: I spent the entire day with a group of very good friends (we used to be ex-colleagues & team mates) for some high tea, catching up & shopping.

SATURDAY MORNING: started off with a breakfast/brunch gathering with another group of girlfriends. These girlfriends are quite the foodie so we went all the way East (to Tampines) to enjoy really cheap & good Yong Tau Foo  (8 items + noodles & soup cost me about $2.90!) followed by some coffee & cakes back at Tampines One mall. I was laughing too hard most of the time that I forgot to take photos of them so here’s the cakes we gobbled instead.  Got a little too carried away that the husband called me twice later on to ask if I had ‘forgotten’ about him. It almost slipped my mind that he needed to go suit shopping & get a new hair cut in order before his event later that evening. Oops.

SATURDAY EVENING:  I met up with my Queens – Spanky & Jas to watch One Fighting Championship at the Indoor Stadium. Spanky had compliment tickets and asked if we were keen to accompany her to a testosterone filled event. I didn’t know what to expect initially as I’ve never watched any sort of professional fight matches (WWE doesn’t count!) on the tele nor live before, lest Mixed Martial Arts, - which was what the championship was based on. Turns out it was quite exciting as we took sides for every fight (almost always cheering for the underdog cuz we felt so bad for them) and the 2 single ladies enjoyed looking at the bared, toned abs of almost every participant that was on display too. It was quite the eye-opener for me, and whenever there was a very intense round of fighting going on, I suddenly felt like I was in a scene of ‘Rocky.’

SUNDAY: finally caught up on sleep by waking up at 11.30am. Decided to take the day nice & slow so after lunch, we headed down to one of the malls for coffee before buying mooncakes and paying my godparents a visit. It’s been months since we last caught up with them, and I was glad we did. It was great knowing what each family member was up to, and updating them on our lives as well. I love my godparents. They are such kind, down-to-earth & loving folks.

Ended the weekend by playing a new xbox game with the husband. Nice to know Luke is a patient partner while I went about doing don’t know what in most of the story scenes. I’m too used to FPS games! :x

Hope your weekend went well too.

Siesta & life’s joys

OH! And I finally watched The Wedding Singer for the first time this evening! Hooray!

BRs for life

The BR & I have been making more effort to arrange for quick meet-ups, albeit last minute, lately. Just to rant, give some news updates or spend some good ole BR time together…

Yesterday I had some 3 hours to kill in town and I texted and asked if she could rescue me from boredom and do a brunch. Turns out she could, right after her meeting ended at 10:30am!

So we had some brunch, chat & took some self-portraits…!

The last time I ever attempted to bake was some 2 years ago when I did a non-bake Mango cheesecake and a Mango delight swiss roll which was well received (at least by my colleagues then). It was good fun, I enjoyed myself but I never ever baked that same recipe again since then because I don’t really fancy my home is a good baking environment. Or rather, using my SIL’s oven and my MIL’s kitchen combine and not knowing where they each keep their stuff will frustrate me before I even start baking… Although I love the idea of preparing desserts for my frequent guests instead of having to get something from Udders ice cream.

So recently when I saw a baking class being offered at a discounted price on Reebonz for The Baking Loft , I knew that I needed to inform Elle (she’s more of an avid baker than I am) about it. Actually I needed to convince her to attend one with me ( not that she needed much convincing after reading about the details of the class).

I was already sold just reading The Baking Loft‘s 3 main selling points: small-sized groups (max. of 8 so that you don’t get too ‘lost’ at any point of time), hands-on approach (I absolutely love this sort of teaching style. I don’t get demo-only classes in fact, I might as well watch the cooking channel instead of paying to watch a live demo) & convenient location (at Central mall). And this was important to me because most of the other classes I attended would usually be one or the other like having a hands-on approach but because the groups were like 5-6 pax in one, we could only participate in a tiny part each, or the location would be somewhere far east or west of Singapore that wouldn’t be too accessible by public transportation.

And of course, reading about how to create a souffle (probably one of the most tough desserts to do because timing is so crucial) and an entire cake from scratch (without Betty Crocker’s help) was icing on the cake (no pun intended).

The location was relatively easy to get to – the corridors reminded me of a hotel. Once we got to the unit, it was like a SOHO apartment inside with lots of sunlight shining in, fully air-conditioned with each participant having their individual work stations. Chef Jimmy Kea took time to introduce himself, teach us some baking fundamentals to take note (% of full cream vs. low fat vs. butter milk), showed us a proper demo with detailed explanation before letting us go entirely hands-on about our creation. It was plenty of fun, asking if we were doing things right and I ate a lot of chocolates <burp>

I liked that they didn’t bother to rush us off too, let us took our time to complete our creations and the best part, there was a dedicated person to do the washing & drying. Hooray.

If you’re keen on holding small private baking/cooking events (you can even bring your own wine/champagne to pair), do check The Baking Loft.

I know Elle & I will definitely be back for more baking fun! And hopefully someday I can earn myself a ‘Kitchen Aid’!
